Dear Inquiring Mind:
Recruits tend to view professional development as the most important factor in switching positions. Making more money is certainly very important as well, but the opportunity to find a more challenging and expansive role is still the No. 1 reason that candidates take a new position.
Companies have to structure themselves as an employer of choice to attract the best people. Here are some of the attributes of companies that are viewed by candidates as highly desirable employers:
· Company produces exciting products and/or services
· Internal culture that is entrepreneurial and creative
· Internal culture that solicits employee feedback
· Internal culture that rewards hard work
Strive to make your company an employer of choice (in addition to paying competitive salaries) and you should have fewer issues when seeking out top candidates. They may not come right away, but they will come. Just be prepared to do the hard work necessary to put yourself in the best possible recruiting position.
