While the national unemployment level has slowly fallen from its peak of 10 percent in 2009, the number of unemployed people far outdistances the number of hires. Just how dire the situation is today can be seen by comparing the size of the gaps for the two most recent recessions. Following the recession in 2000, for every 10 hires, 14 people remained unemployed. Today, following the 2008-09 recession, for every 10 hires, 35 people remain unemployed.
