Most companies consider job boards of various kinds—whether big and
comprehensive or small and devoted to niches—one tool for good hiring. But
they’re not the top source of new employees, according to the sixth annual
Sources of Hire study, conducted in January 2007 by
CareerXroads.
The consulting company found that nearly 34 percent of all open positions were
filled by internal transfers and promotions. At 26 percent, referrals were the
No. 1 external source of hire, and 95 percent those referrals came from
employees. Hires attributed to specific job boards—such as Monster,
CareerBuilder and HotJobs, as well as niche job boards—represented 12.3 percent
of external hires and 8.1 percent of all positions filled.
